Emily has a B.A. in Sociology and Women Studies and a Master’s of Education in School Counseling from the University of Delaware. She also holds a MBA in Organizational and Environmental Sustainability from Antioch University New England.
She is a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) through the NBCC (National Board of Certified Counselors) and continually refines her understanding of the applied science of trauma.
She has completed more than 120 hours of training in Somatic Experiencing.™ She has trained in SMART (Sensory-Motor Arousal Therapy) as well as trauma-informed sensory modulation with Dr. Tina Champagne. She’s participated in small group consultation with Dr. Bessel van der Kolk and completed an introductory class in NMT™ (Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics). She’s a Reiki practitioner and completed a certificate in the Penn Program for Mindfulness.
She relishes opportunities for nerding out – refining her skills, broadening her knowledge, and improving her effectiveness as a trainer, consultant, facilitator, and leader.
Emily’s career began with a strong desire to “make a difference in the world.” Hired at twenty three as an executive director of a start-up after school program for inner city children in Wilmington, DE, she witnessed the complex intersection of race, poverty, neighborhood violence, and personal trauma. That experience committed her to making a difference for those under-served, invisible, or misunderstood.
She worked as a class advisor for “Delaware Futures” – guiding disadvantaged youth in making their college aspirations a reality. After leaving Delaware Futures and pursuing her Master’s Degree in School Counseling, Emily took on an urban intermediate school, Drew Pyle, as a school counselor for 650 students. This experience she often describes as “baptism by fire.” Using techniques of adventure based counseling and facilitation, she engaged students and staff in movement – as a means of emotional regulation. Through this, she began to see a difference.
Landing a job across the street from her first purchased home, Emily moved onto Scenic Hills Elementary School in Springfield, PA. There, she studied the phenomenon of contagion and anxiety. Working closely with an occupational therapist, she began to integrate body-based mindfulness techniques with children and staff in classroom guidance lessons to diminish the experience of anxiety that is common in high performing academic settings.
In the not too distant past, she worked as a student assistance counselor at ConVal High School in Peterborough, NH. There, she supported students experiencing childhood adversity. She developed a plethora of group counseling opportunities for students – including a guided meditation group called, “Zen Den.” She developed and successfully implemented a curriculum with her colleague, Shawn King, called, “Core Regulation” for substance abusing teens. “Core Regulation” is a 12-week trauma-informed curriculum focused on body awareness, stress reaction, nervous system regulation, and “thwarting the inner meathead.” She initiated and received recognition for spearheading the ConVal Substance Abuse Task Force, that in its infancy sought to accomplish a trauma-informed approach to substance misuse prevention.
When not working, which is a passion, Emily likes to have fun! She enjoys laughing, hiking, playing tennis, gardening, reading, cooking and connecting with family and friends. She lives in bucolic Hancock, NH with her husband, Scott, and their two children.
